As we explore who’s responsible for leading the Battle Royale against obesity we, of course, look to the healthcare industry (physicians, dietitians, nurses, etc.). In doing so, we have to wonder if these professionals are any different than the rest of us. Are those in the healthcare industry immune to the rapidly growing obesity epidemic?
Read Dr. Adam Bordes’ article for simple, proven methods of engaging employees in wellness programs that work for health care environments. The article previews some of the successful strategies that will be outlined at the 2012 Health Care Provider Wellness Conference, June 14-15, at the Hilton Los Angeles / Universal City. HASC presented its first gang awareness program for health care
professionals at the California Endowment April 5. More than 40
CNOs, emergency department staff, clinicians, administrators,
patient advocates, security staff and case managers attended to
hear local hospitals present information about successfully
preventing gang violence in hospitals.
With nearly half of all nonfatal assaults and violence occurring
in health care settings, according to the Bureau of Labor
Statistics, violence is a growing concern.
The first 50 people who register for HASC’s 2nd Annual Health
Care Provider Wellness Conference will be entered into a drawing
for a grand prize of a two-night stay for two at the Hilton
LA/Universal and two tickets to Universal Studios.

California’s population is growing, aging and becoming
increasingly diverse. These compounding factors—including
the additional four million Californians expected to secure
health insurance coverage by 2014 under the Affordable Care
Act—will create unprecedented demand for health care services
that must be delivered by a strong health workforce.

A number of schools in the Los Angeles / Orange County area provide training in health science. Use the comprehensive list of schools and their available programs listed here for an overview of what is available, and where to find more information.
Funded primarily through the U.S. Department of Labor federal
Workforce Investment Act (WIA), the City of Los Angeles Workforce
Investment Board (WIB) oversees the City’s $45 million workforce
delivery system of 18 WorkSource Centers for adult job seekers
and 13 OneSource Centers for youth.
Board members are appointed by the Mayor from the leadership
ranks of key industries, education, economic development,
organized labor as well as other sectors vital to the Los Angeles
economy.
As health care faces a shortage of skilled workers who can
deliver quality care in an increasingly scrutinized industry,
strong workforce development programs are essential. HASC’s
Workforce Development Initiative seeks to raise awareness among
our members of the various health care training programs
available and of program graduates seeking employment
opportunities. Additionally, this initiative strives to
improve communication between HASC members and training providers
of workforce development needs. For more information, please

A townhall meeting titled Partner with Nurses for a Healthy
California at the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce is
scheduled to take place Monday, Feb. 27.
HASC’s interactive seminar 2012 HR Issues – Are You
Ready? offered timely, critical information on issues that
impact human resources within hospitals and health systems.
