One of the region’s most anticipated health care emergency drills
was staged on the old campus of the LAC + USC Medical Center on
March 19. Presented by HASC’s Security and Safety Committee and
with more than 230 security, clinical, administrative and law
enforcement staff attending, the standing-room only event was
designed to simulate an active shooter incident and ensure that
those in attendance leave with some tools to create a response
plan for their organization.
Thank you to all of the police officers, security personnel,
human resources staff and others who took part in HASC’s first
Hospital Security & Safety Conference. More than 230 attended
this standing-room only event at the old campus of LAC + USC
Medical Center. Download

HASC is pleased to announce the Southern California Association
for Healthcare Risk Management (SCAHRM) has endorsed the 2013
HASC Security and Safety Conference: Active Shooter
Drill, to be held March 19, at the LAC + USC Medical Center.
The conference will include dramatization of an active shooter
event in both emergency room and office settings. Participants
will collaborate with law enforcement and risk analysis experts
to develop a plan and effective policies focused on survival and
recovery from such devastating events.
HASC is compiling a special anniversary brochure to commemorate
our organization’s first 90 years—and we want to hear from you.
Hospitals and health systems are on the front lines, providing
care and experiencing the impact of prominent changes in the
health care industry over the last century—like the advent of
Medicare and health care reform. To capture the membership’s
perspective, HASC is looking for responses to the following
question from across the Southern California region:
February 21, 2013Patricia Wall, CAEDaniel Holden, AlliedBarton Security Services
According to a 2012 study by Johns Hopkins University School of
Medicine, hospital-based shootings are rare, but recent attacks
in Mississippi, Pennsylvania, and California—and non-hospital gun
violence in places like Colorado and New York—can attest to the
number of lives affected by these deadly events. With each
devastating occurrence, we ask the same questions: Why did it
happen; could we have been better prepared; and how do we prevent
it from happening again?
HASC Safety and Security Committee Chair Daniel J. Holden, BBA,
BS, MBA, CPP, CEM, Director of Healthcare Services, Southwest
Region, AlliedBarton Security Services, provides some key
guidelines on being prepared for an active shooter in hospitals
with an article highlighting the upcoming March 19 active shooter
drill in
Campus Safety Magazine.
Registration is in full swing for the 2013 HASC Annual Meeting,
May 8-10, at St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort, as HASC announces
the addition of five timely breakout sessions led by local and
national leaders in health care. Woven throughout the
breakouts is this year’s theme—Making Innovation Happen.
HASC is pleased to announce committee leadership for the 2013
calendar year. We appreciate the volunteer support that we
receive from members each year for leading and serving on HASC
committees and boards.
HASC is offering special rates for members who register by Jan.
15 for the upcoming Active Shooter Drill at the LAC + USC Medical
Center (old campus).
This simulation exercise, scheduled for Mar. 19, moves beyond
classroom training to offer an opportunity to actively
participate in two emergency scenarios: one in an ER setting and
the other in an office environment. Collaborate with law
enforcement and risk analysis experts to learn how you can
involve key stakeholders to create a local plan for survival and
recovery for your hospital.
How do you make innovation happen amid chaos and uncertainty? The
HASC Annual Meeting, May 8-10, at St.
Regis Monarch Beach Resort, Dana Point, will tackle the challenge
of moving from an innovative idea to implementation.
Astronaut Mark E. Kelly and political commentator David Gergen
