Legislature Extends SB 1773 Sunset Until 2014
The state legislature has extended the effective date for SB 1773, which authorized Boards of Supervisors to increase penalty assessments on Vehicle Code violations to provide additional funding for pediatric emergency and trauma care.

Educating Inland Hospitals, Law Enforcement on Reporting Assaults Against Hospital Personnel
Hospitals are mandated to report assaults or battery against on-duty hospital personnel [per Health and Safety code section 1257.7 (d)] - however, to date neither hospitals nor law enforcement have been taking sufficient action to routinely comply with this mandate. In the HASC Inland Area, work is currently being done to help educate regional hospitals and law enforcement officials about this law.

Loma Linda University Behavioral Medicine Center (LLUBMC) has been awarded a grant from UniHealth Foundation of $627,753 over three years to treat adolescents 13 years of age and older who self-harm, an unhealthy practice of causing physical pain to mask emotional trauma.

County of Orange OK's $3.1 Million for Inpatient Psychiatric Treatment Beds
With the approval of the 2008-09 County Budget on June 24, the Orange County Board of Supervisors approved an additional $3.1 million to pay for treatment beds for uninsured patients who are suffering from psychiatric emergencies.

Hospitals Encouraged to Participate in Recuperative Care Project
On March 14 of this year, the Recuperative Care Demonstration Project launched 30 new recuperative care beds at the Salvation Army Bell Shelter for homeless patients discharged from Los Angeles-area hospitals who require further medical attention. Of these additional beds, 15 are for exclusive use by private hospitals. To date, 26 private hospitals have agreed to utilize these beds, providing a much-needed discharge option for their homeless patients.
