Regional Health Care Fraud Prevention Summit Takes Place in Los Angeles (Sep 3, 2010)
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) held a daylong summit focusing on innovative ways to eliminate fraud within the U.S. health care system. The summit took place at Los Angeles City College on Aug. 26 and featured educational panels by law enforcement officials, consumer experts, providers and key government agencies.

Nominations for Hospital Hero Awards Due Sept. 27 (Sep 3, 2010)
The Annual Hospital Hero Awards Event honors outstanding achievements and events that occur within hospitals throughout the HASC region. The event provides hospitals with an opportunity to identify, recognize and reward excellence in the provision of health care at the front line. The event honors health care professionals who are dedicated to patient care and who help to create miracles for patients. Nominations for the awards are due by Sept. 27.

Los Angeles Recuperative Care Program Will Relaunch in October (Aug 27, 2010)
HASC and NHF are pleased to announce the grand reopening of the LA Recuperative Care Program on Oct. 1, 2010. In partnership with Illumination Foundation, a non-profit organization that addresses homelessness through integrated wrap-around services, the new LA program will mirror the successes of the Orange County Recuperative Care Program.

L.A. County Supervisors Approve Board of Directors for Martin Luther King Jr. Hospital (Aug 13, 2010)
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, in conjunction with the University of California (UC), approved the new seven-member Board of Directors for the new, private, non-profit Martin Luther King Jr. Hospital, scheduled to reopen in 2013.

Southern California Patient Safety Collaborative Meeting Focuses on Hospital-acquired Infections, Sepsis and Surgical Care Improvement Project (Aug 13, 2010)
The Southern California Patient Safety Collaborative (SCPSC) held its third Track I meeting this week, focusing on Hospital-acquired Infections, Sepsis and Surgical Care Improvement Project. The SCPSC is funded for 2010 through 2012 by Anthem Blue Cross and is part of Patient Safety First…a California Partnership for Health. One hundred fifty-two registrants from 85 hospitals took part in this meeting.

Next HASC/Wound Care Education Institute Training and Certification Will Take Place Aug. 30 (Aug 6, 2010)
HASC member hospitals, in partnership with the Health Services Advisory Group (the California QIO), are working to accelerate improvement in wound care and pressure ulcer prevention through the Southern California Patient Safety Collaborative. This collaborative is part of Patient Safety First… a California Partnership for Health, which is funded by Anthem Blue Cross.

HASC Holds First 'Private Label' Course on Leadership Skills for RNs (Aug 6, 2010)
In partnership with Flex Ed, HASC held its first 'private label' program titled Leadership Skills for RNs on July 20. Forty-two registered nurses from HASC member hospitals attended the program, held at the California Endowment. The eight-hour program provided a review of key concepts of Emotional Intelligence, as well as ways to apply Emotionally Intelligent traits to key nursing leadership skills. These skills include effective communication with all members of the healthcare team, as well as coaching and mentoring skills.

FLSA Program on Wage Hour Law Set for Sept. 16 (Aug 6, 2010)
The Sept. 16 Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) program, Navigating Through the Wage Hour Maze, will address the complicated wage hour rules imposed upon healthcare employers under California and federal law. In light of the current wage hour class action trend, it is imperative that employers conduct comprehensive wage hour audits.
