2013 HR Issues: What You Should Do to Prepare Now!
As we approach the new era of health care reform, hospitals and
health systems will need to create more efficient, innovative
ways to deliver health care. This will have a substantial impact
upon organizations’ human capital. HR leaders must seriously
examine the engagement culture in their organizations and
consider revising or developing new strategies to better prepare
for the impact of health care reform.
Geared toward non-certified beginning interviewers in the MSI

Critical Issues Facing Hospitals
Medical miracles happen every day in California’s community
hospitals. Babies are born, the sick and injured are treated,
patients with critical illnesses are cured. Millions of
Californians rely on community hospitals and emergency rooms to
be there when they need them most.
As part of the American Hospital Association (AHA), HASC partners
with the National Healthcare Career Network (NHCN) to address
today’s workforce crisis by launching the California Healthcare Career
Center. The NHCN is a network of over 250 professional
healthcare associations. By joining, HASC’s online career center

The Los Angeles City Clerk certified a petition titled City
of Los Angeles Public Health Protection Act that requires
the Los Angeles City Council to establish its own Public Health
Department. The City can create the department by way of an
ordinance or place the issue before voters possibly in June 2014.
The Orange County Board of Supervisors, on a 4-1 vote, approved a
$2 million budget augmentation for the MSI Hospital Pool this
week. Hospitals will lose well over $200 million in actual costs
in this year’s MSI program. Supervisors Nguyen, Bates, Nelson
(Chairman of the Board), and Spitzer voted to support the
appropriation; Supervisor Moorlach dissented.

In a scramble before open enrollment for the health insurance
exchanges begins in October, Enroll America on Tuesday will
launch Get America Covered, a campaign to educate Americans about
the coverage options available to them under the 2010 health
reform law.
About half of Americans say they don’t know how the Affordable
Care Act will affect them. Four in 10 think the 2010 law has been
repealed or overturned, or they are unsure where it stands. So
chances are good that when the major provisions kick in next
year, including online health insurance marketplaces and new
standards for health plan costs and coverage, people are going to
have questions. Lots of questions. When they do, the biggest one
of all may be where to turn for answers.
There’s good news for most companies that provide health benefits
for their employees: America’s slowdown in medical costs may be
turning into a trend, rather than a mere pause.
Doctors will begin taking patients Wednesday at Kaiser
Permanente’s newest South Bay medical facility in Carson. The
three-story building has been under construction for a
year.
